Zanzibar's rich cultural heritage is woven into the fabric of its traditional crafts - intricate basket weaving, beautiful textiles, carved wooden items, and delicate jewelry. These crafts, passed down through generations, are both cultural treasures and economic opportunities for women artisans.
A Heritage at Risk
As cheap, mass-produced goods flood the market, traditional crafts are at risk of being lost. Younger generations often see craftwork as old-fashioned and unprofitable. Yet, there is growing global demand for authentic, handmade products with cultural significance.
Our Artisan Program
Our Traditional Crafts Revival program works to preserve these skills while making them economically viable for women artisans. We provide:
- Skills training from master craftswomen
- Quality materials at fair prices
- Product design support for modern markets
- Marketing and branding assistance
- Access to local and international buyers
- Fair trade certification support
The Master Craftswomen
At the heart of our program are the master craftswomen - elderly women who carry decades of knowledge in their skilled hands. We document their techniques, celebrate their artistry, and pair them with younger women eager to learn.
"My grandmother taught my mother, and my mother taught me," says Bi Khadija, 72, a master basket weaver. "I worried these skills would die with me. Now I have 15 young women learning from me. Our traditions will continue."
Modern Markets, Traditional Skills
We've helped our artisans adapt traditional designs for contemporary markets without losing their cultural authenticity. Our products are now sold in boutique hotels, craft markets, and online platforms reaching customers worldwide.
Economic Impact
Women in our artisan program earn an average of 3 times more than they did before. This additional income supports children's education, family healthcare, and home improvements. Craft work also allows women to earn while caring for their families at home.
Cultural Preservation
Beyond economics, our program preserves intangible cultural heritage. We've documented traditional techniques through video and written records, ensuring this knowledge survives for future generations.
