Bridging the Digital Divide: Our New Tech Initiative

March 8, 2026

In an increasingly digital world, access to technology and the skills to use it have become essential for economic participation and social inclusion. Recognizing this, Women's Rising Organization has launched an ambitious new initiative to bring digital literacy to women and girls across rural Zanzibar.

The Digital Divide

Despite rapid technological advancement globally, many women in rural Zanzibar have never used a computer or smartphone. This digital divide limits their access to information, economic opportunities, and essential services.

Our Digital Literacy Program aims to change this by providing:

  • Basic computer skills training
  • Smartphone and internet navigation
  • Online safety and security awareness
  • Digital financial services education
  • Social media for business

Mobile Learning Centers

To reach women in remote areas, we have established mobile learning centers equipped with tablets and portable internet connectivity. These centers travel to different villages, bringing technology education directly to the communities.

Success Stories Emerging

Already, we are seeing remarkable transformations. Salma, a 45-year-old farmer, now uses her smartphone to check market prices before selling her crops, ensuring she gets fair value for her produce.

"Before, I had to rely on what buyers told me," Salma explains. "Now I can check prices myself. It has made a big difference for my family."

Youth Engagement

We are also working with young girls to develop more advanced digital skills, including basic coding and web design. By equipping the next generation with these skills, we are preparing them for the jobs of the future.
