Growing Together: Women Leading Sustainable Farming

February 1, 2026

Agriculture is the backbone of Zanzibar's economy, and women are its unsung heroes. They tend the fields, harvest the crops, and feed their families. Yet, they often lack access to training, resources, and markets. Our Sustainable Agriculture Program is changing this narrative.

Cultivating Change

Launched in 2024, our agricultural program takes a holistic approach to farming. We don't just teach women how to grow more; we teach them how to grow better - in ways that are sustainable, profitable, and environmentally responsible.

Training Components

Our comprehensive training covers:

  • Organic farming techniques
  • Water conservation and irrigation
  • Composting and natural fertilizers
  • Pest management without chemicals
  • Crop diversification and rotation
  • Post-harvest handling and storage
  • Market access and fair pricing

The Women's Cooperative

One of our proudest achievements is the establishment of the Zanzibar Women Farmers' Cooperative. This group of 75 women farmers pools their resources, shares equipment, and markets their produce collectively.

"Alone, we were vulnerable to middlemen who paid us very little," explains Sauda, the cooperative's chairperson. "Together, we negotiate better prices. Together, we are strong."

Success in the Fields

The results speak for themselves. Women in our program have seen an average 40% increase in crop yields while reducing their use of chemical inputs by 60%. More importantly, they are earning more and eating better.

Environmental Stewardship

Our program also emphasizes environmental conservation. Participants have planted over 5,000 trees, established community seed banks to preserve traditional crop varieties, and implemented water-saving techniques that benefit entire villages.

From Farm to Market

We've also created direct links between our women farmers and local hotels and restaurants, ensuring fair prices and reliable markets for their organic produce. This "farm to table" approach benefits everyone - farmers earn more, businesses get quality products, and consumers enjoy fresh, healthy food.
