Good nutrition in the first 1,000 days of life - from conception to a child's second birthday - has a profound impact on health, cognitive development, and future potential. Our Maternal and Child Nutrition Program focuses on this critical window to give children the best start in life.
The Nutrition Challenge
Despite Zanzibar's natural abundance, malnutrition remains a significant challenge, particularly in rural areas. Limited knowledge about nutrition, food insecurity, and cultural practices contribute to high rates of stunting and micronutrient deficiencies among children.
Our Comprehensive Approach
We address nutrition through multiple channels:
- Nutrition education for pregnant women and new mothers
- Cooking demonstrations using local, affordable ingredients
- Kitchen gardens for household food production
- Growth monitoring and early intervention
- Micronutrient supplementation
- Breastfeeding support and education
- Food preservation and storage techniques
The Mother-to-Mother Groups
At the heart of our program are Mother-to-Mother support groups. These groups of 15-20 women meet weekly to learn about nutrition, share experiences, and support each other through pregnancy and early motherhood.
"The group saved my baby's life," shares Jamila, mother of 8-month-old Hassan. "When he wasn't gaining weight, the other mothers helped me understand what to do. They showed me how to make nutritious porridge from ingredients I already had. Now Hassan is healthy and growing well."
Kitchen Gardens
We help families establish small vegetable gardens that provide fresh, nutritious produce year-round. These gardens not only improve nutrition but also reduce food expenses and teach children about healthy eating.
Measuring Success
Our program has achieved remarkable results:
- 40% reduction in childhood stunting among participants
- 85% of mothers exclusively breastfeeding for 6 months
- 500 kitchen gardens established
- 3,000 mothers trained in nutrition education
- Significant improvement in dietary diversity
Beyond Nutrition
Our Mother-to-Mother groups have become platforms for broader women's empowerment. Members support each other through challenges, share resources, and advocate for their communities. Many have gone on to join our other programs.
